Community leaders introduced the updated See You In Terre Haute Community Plan on Thursday as a collaborative vision that will drive growth, economic opportunity and quality of life across Terre Haute and Vigo County.

Speakers at the event at the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce office in the Hub included Mayor Brandon Sakbun, Vigo County Commissioner Chris Switzer and President and CEO of Union Health Steve Holman, who has been co-chair of the See You in Terre Haute initiative since 2019.

The updated plan is structured around five key pillars — economic development, infrastructure, education and workforce development, and health, wellness and recreation and community image and identity.

Switzer described how the infrastructure plans will make the area able to adapt to future needs.

“Strong infrastructure is the backbone of a thriving community,” Switzer said. “When we invest in transportation, utilities, broadband, and housing, we create the conditions for long-term growth, attract private investment, and improve quality of life for every resident. This updated plan reflects that commitment and helps move our region forward.”

Holman focused on how health and wellness will transform “what we have today into something different tomorrow.”

He said myriad health issues suffered by Vigo County residents such as obesity and cardiovascular disease are not “your lot in life — it can change.”

Sakbun explained how the plan will mold community image and identity, noting the “A Level Above” city signs are being modernized for the first time since they were first put up around town, back when he was in third grade. These target pillars are designed to support longterm prosperity and strategic growth in the region.

Kristin Craig of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce announced that the community plan seeks to address population decline.

Increasing local population by 1% by 2030 may be a modest goal, but it would reverse the diminishing numbers that have been observed for years.

The Wabash Valley Community Foundation helped fund the See You in Terre Haute initiative’s community plan.
