NEW CARLISLE — The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to install delineators and signs to clear up traffic issues on Indiana 2.
The St. Joseph County Police Department enacted an enforcement action on Feb. 24 to address these issues by pulling over and educating anyone breaking the law. By March 3, a week after the enforcement action, police said "great work" is being done as 44 warnings, 29 citations and two arrests were issued during their efforts on Indiana 2 and U.S. 20.
There's been a focus on morning and evening rush hours, county police said in an app notification. Police told The Tribune the enforcement action will go on for as long as it's needed as they continue working with Amazon, the St. Joseph County engineer and INDOT to remedy these issues.
Cars drive past construction work taking place on a portion of land south of Indiana 2 and west of Strawberry Road on an $11 billion Amazon Web Services data center campus on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025, between South Bend and New Carlisle.
INDOT has two resurfacing projects on Indiana 2: one, from the U.S. 20 and Indiana 2 "dogbone" interchange — a form of a diamond interchange also known as a double roundabout — near Rolling Prairie to Tulip Road, was completed, and a second, from Tulip Road to the St. Joseph Valley Parkway, will be completed this year, INDOT said.
Near the Amazon facility, INDOT has added acceleration and deceleration lanes in the area, they told The Tribune Feb. 26. To help make lanes more apparent, they plan to add delineators — tall, thin posts — to help motorists use them more correctly, they said, and signage — including no u-turn signs — in the corridor in some locations.
