St. Joseph County officials are considering a unique kind of interchange at Indiana 2 and Larrison Road — at the edge of the future GM/Samsung battery plant — that motorists have never seen in this area.

The curious design would emphasize safe left turns, because the area is due to see heavy truck traffic. But no, it isn’t the so-called “Michigan left.”

The “diverging diamond” interchange would be a first in a 13-county region in Northern Indiana from the Illinois line to Logansport, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

And the potential cost could approach $45 million to $50 million, Bill Schalliol, the county’s executive director of economic development, said.

But all of that is preliminary. Schalliol and INDOT spokesman Adam Parkhouse said the two entities are weighing options for a greatly expanded interchange at Indiana 2 and Larrison. They both note that, so far, all signs point to the diverging diamond.
