CHESTERTON — A Chesterton couple scheduled to appear in a federal judge’s chambers Friday in Evansville said they are full of hope that their battle to be married in Indiana is almost over.
Bonnie Everly and Lyn Judkins will be in U.S. District Court Judge Richard L. Young’s courtroom to hear oral arguments in the latest chapter in Baskin vs Bogan, a federal lawsuit filed by Lambda Legal in March in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana on behalf of five Indiana couples, three of whom live in Northwest Indiana.
According to a Lambda Legal spokesman, Young is considering a motion for summary judgment seeking to have Indiana’s ban on gay marriages overturned.
“I am very hopeful that now is the time Indiana will see that marriage is marriage,” Everly said.
She thinks Young’s previous decision earlier this month, granting temporary recognition to the marriage of a Munster couple, Amy Sandler and Niki Quasney, bodes well for them.
“It’s a real hopeful sign,” Everly said.
If Friday’s hearing does not result in the end to Indiana’s ban on same sex marriage, the couple vow to continue their fight.
“I’m willing to go the distance. I’m hopeful, but I won’t give up until Indiana would recognizes our marriage,” Everly said.
“Lyn thinks I’m worth waiting for. I know she’s worth waiting for,” Everly said.
