The Fort Wayne campus run jointly by Indiana University and Purdue is making more than random noise about feeling like a second-class citizen, stranded across the state from its namesakes’ flagship campuses.

In two weeks, the IPFW campus will be the subject of a legislative study committee hearing in Indianapolis. The upshot: Should the campus break free from IU and Purdue to create a new Fort Wayne University. At the very least, should it be allowed its own set of trustees to remedy the distant cousin effect.

But as lawmakers weigh making the Fort Wayne campus its own state university, question No. 1 should be: Would nearly as many students attend IPFW if it didn’t come with the promise of a Purdue- or IU-branded diploma?
