Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has joined the opposition to a proposed state constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage.

Winnecke's spokeswoman, Ella Johnson-Watson, confirmed a report from indypolitics.org that the Republican mayor has written Southwestern Indiana lawmakers explaining his opposition to the measure, which would put the state's current ban on same-sex marriage into the constitution and also ban civil unions.

In a letter to area lawmakers, Winnecke stated the amendment was unnecessarily divisive and that economic development, jobs and the quality of life were the most important issues in his part of the state.

Evansville City Councilman Jonathan Weaver, D-At-Large, told the Courier & Press today that he and three colleagues - Dan McGinn, R-1st Ward, Missy Mosby, D-2nd Ward, and Stephanie Brinkerhoff-Riley, D-3rd Ward - will co-sponsor a City Council resolution taking the same position. The resolution is to be filed Wednesday with the City Clerk's office.

The next scheduled Council meeting is Monday.
