It’s been nearly five years since the now Indiana University Health Arnett hospital opened its doors and nearly three years for St. Elizabeth East, less than three miles away.

The construction made Greater Lafayette again an area with two hospitals, as it had been before Home Hospital and Franciscan St. Elizabeth merged. And the competition didn’t fade once the hospitals were built.

“It’s a bit like retail,” said Douglas Leonard, president of the Indiana Hospital Association. Having two hospitals gives patients flexibility, and they can pick the hospital with the more attractive amenities, he said.
