SOUTH BEND - Bitterly cold temperatures haven't slowed down area homebuilders this winter.

As a matter of fact, local builders are enjoying their busiest cold season in several years.

"It's probably been the best winter in four or five years," said Andy Place Jr., vice president of Place Builders. "The economy is getting better and a little more stable."

According to the Home Builders Association of St. Joseph County, companies pulled 166 permits for almost $42 million worth of new home construction during the first 11 months of 2013.

That's an increase from 2012, when the county issued 143 permits for about $31 million worth of home construction. There were 128 permits worth $26 million in 2011.
