ANDERSON — Madison County Commissioners have approved four projects to be financed through the county’s share of American Rescue Plan funds.

Projects include a $4 million extension of the White River Greenway, $2.5 million for a sewer infrastructure project in Alexandria, $1.3 million to alleviate drainage issues in north Anderson, and $230,000 for the county’s information technology department.

Commissioners on Tuesday approved $8,030,000 for the four projects. The allocations have to be approved by the Madison County Council, as well.

The county has about $9 million more in American Rescue Plan funds to allocate by the end of the year.

County Engineer Jessica Bastin said the $4 million allocated Tuesday for the newly formed Madison County Department of Parks and Recreation will be used to extend the White River Greenway trail system from Anderson to the Hamilton County line.

“Once the funding is approved, the park board will begin the process of receiving proposals from engineering companies for the design work as soon as possible,” Bastin said.

Commissioners approved $1.3 million to alleviate drainage issues along the Carter Geeting Drain in north Anderson to the west of Scatterfield Road along Hartman Road.

The drain is adjacent to the site where the new Madison County jail will be constructed.

“This will help with drainage in the area,” Commissioner John Richwine said. “There could be some participation from property owners on funding the project.”

Commissioners approved $2.5 million for a regional sewer district infrastructure project for a housing addition in Alexandria. Bastin said it will be the initial funding for the proposed Madison County Regional Utility District.

The county IT department was approved for $230,000 to replace existing network storage equipment.
