MUNCIE — In a first-of-its-kind partnership, Ivy Tech Community College, the NAACP Muncie Branch and Indiana Michigan Power will launch the Muncie Youth Empowerment Program this week, giving 50 minority high school students opportunities in education and leadership training.

Every year, the program will select 50 high school students within Delaware County, with the goal of expanding minority students’ experiences and opening doors to higher learning.

According to a release, the program will help students embrace their potential through leadership development, life skills courses, educational programs, expression through the arts and job placement.

Participating students will receive college credit through Ivy Tech coursework and visit Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Shafer Leadership Academy will also provide a five-module series exploring best practices in leadership. Students also can seek summer employment with the Muncie Parks and Recreation summer youth employment program.

“This program will expose students to college courses while providing life-changing, enriching experiences," said Wayne Johnson, Ivy Tech’s vice chancellor of enrollment services, sain the release. "We aim to introduce students to various paths to success through educational and career orientation while also relaying that higher education does not have to be a daunting process."
