MUNCIE — Statistics show Delaware County, by leaps and bounds, led the state in methamphetamine labs seized in 2013.

A new year certainly hasn’t slowed that trend down. In fact, if this week is any indication, the meth problem in Muncie is only getting worse. At least 25 people since Monday have been taken into police custody in various meth-related incidents in Muncie.

The latest large-scale bust was Friday morning, when eight people were arrested after police said an active meth lab was found in the same southeastside home where a visitor brought her two young children.

The still-cooking lab was discovered about 10 a.m. in the basement at 1520 E. Second St., at the home of Christopher Edward Wright, 51, and Nicholas Allen Boyer, 24. They were arrested and preliminarily charged with manufacturing and possession of meth, possession of meth precursors, maintaining a common nuisance and possession of marijuana.

Muncie police Sgt. Brad Arey said when officers arrived on scene, they were overcome by fumes emitting from the home. Two of visitor Grace Marie Logan’s children — one 4 and the other believed to be between 5 and 6 — were removed from the property via ambulance and taken to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital for evaluation. They were not believed to be seriously injured.
