Top performing school districts would get calendar flexibility under Indiana bill

West Lafayette Community Schools Superintendent Rocky Killion is all for a bill that would give high-performing school districts more flexibility in setting their class schedules.

But why, he asks, stop with just those schools?

Under the bill, authored by Carmel Republican Sen. Mike Delph, high performing districts would no longer be bound by the 180 school days required by Indiana law.

Instead, administrators at top-performing schools could, for instance, set a three-day school week or a 10-hour school day if they felt it would help their students excel and as long as they met equivalent classroom hours.
