MUNCIE — Five farm supply stores in Indiana have been fined for allegedly recommending off-label use of over-the-counter fly bait as raccoon poison.
In the estimation of the state chemist’s office, the practice of using Golden Malrin fly bait to kill raccoons is common enough among Hoosiers to warrant restricting access to the product to certified pesticide applicators.
“We have a problem,” said Dave Scott, manager of the pesticide section in the state chemist’s office. “The only way we can think of to remedy it is to restrict the general public’s access to it, so it would only be accessible to trained and certified people who know better.”
