WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Joe Donnelly said Friday that Michigan City will receive more than $600,000 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The Michigan City Housing Authority will receive $439,198 in the form of a Capital Fund Formula Allocation, which can be used to generate economic activity by rehabilitating and developing public housing, he said.

Michigan City will receive $193,547 through a Community Development Block Grant. Local governments can use such funds to develop affordable housing, economic opportunities and improve living environments for their citizens, Donnelly said.

"These grants are the first of what we hope will be several grants to address the needs of those who have been negatively impacted," Mayor Chuck Oberlie said. "The money will be used to address the specific housing needs of those requiring assistance in rent, utilities and minor repairs."

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes $13.61 billion for projects and programs administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Nearly 75 percent of the funding was allocated to state and local recipients.
