WEST LAFAYETTE – Ready or not, Purdue’s West Lafayette campus will come back to life this August, as it prepares to welcome a record freshman class and implement many restrictions and changes to daily activities.
Like other colleges and universities across the country, Purdue transitioned to virtual classes in March, virtual commencement ceremonies in May and is holding virtual classes this summer. Under the direction of President Mitch Daniels, Purdue also led the charge to begin to lay out guidelines to reopen, with Daniels saying earlier that coronavirus poses “zero lethal threat” to young people.
Purdue has started to lay out what the fall 2020 semester could look like on the West Lafayette campus, including mandatory masks for anyone going into a building on campus or going into an outdoor crowded space.
The fall academic semester will consist of traditional classroom instruction from Aug. 24 to Nov. 24, with the rest of the semester completed remotely after Thanksgiving. What the spring 2021 semester will look like remains to be seen.
These guidelines, which were announced by the university May 21 and approved by the Purdue trustees Tuesday, will apply to anyone who steps foot on campus – including visitors, students or those working.
