Fulton County is working on a financial incentive package for a proposed NextEra Energy Resources, Juno Beach, Fla., commercial wind farm.
Fulton Economic Development Corp. is trying to determine the financial impact a 17,000-acre wind farm would have.
FeDCO Director Terry Lee told Fulton County commissioners Tuesday he is working with outside consultants on the project. Umbaugh Associates. A Plymouth accounting firm, is preparing a financial analysis. The South Bend office of the Barnes & Thornburg law firm is reviewing the county’s wind ordinance.
NextEra Energy has indicated their investment could be as much as $200 million, said Commissioner Roger Rose.
Lee told commissioners the developers plan to ask for a 10-year property tax abatement.
The proposed project includes 40 to 70 wind turbines spread across northern Fulton and southern Marshall counties. Fulton County’s turbines would be focused in Richland Township, said Lee.
NextEra is conducting environmental impact studies. The company is putting up netting to determine bird and bat migratory patterns.
Commissioner Sherry Fulton said Lee and FeDCO should take the reins for the county, but also keep commissioners informed.
