A bronze sculpture of Ernie Pyle was met with onlookers and photographers when it was installed at Indiana University a week ago. The excitement even caused the Media School's website to crash for a while.
However, there’s one edit that needs to be made.
The word "correspondent" is misspelled - it's missing an "r" - on the famous World War II journalist’s jacket, university and Media School leaders found Wednesday. It was just two days before the dedication of the sculpture and inauguration of the Media School at 2 p.m. Friday in Franklin Hall, home of the new school.
“It’s an unfortunate mistake,” said Mark Land, the IU spokesman.
The sculpture is made of bronze, which sculptor Tuck Langland previously said is selected by sculptors because it is long-lasting. The fix won’t be easy, he said, but it will be done, just not by Friday’s dedication.
“We’re going to fix it,” Langland said.
The artist, an IU South Bend professor emeritus of sculpture, also created the Herman B Wells sculpture, dedicated in 2000 in the Old Crescent. He was asked by IU President Michael McRobbie to create the Pyle sculpture.
