NORTH VERNON — A North Vernon employer plans to lay off nearly 100 workers, according to a notice filed with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

GT Industries Inc. recently filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, stating that 95 workers will be laid off on Dec. 1, citing “end of production on program” without providing further details. The notice also lists a second layoff date of April 13 but does not specify how many workers will be affected on that date.

GT Industries operates a 320,750-square-foot facility in North Vernon with primary operations including die stamping, automated assembly, robotic arc welding and spot welding, according to the company’s website. It is a subsidiary of Michigan-based automotive supplier Midway Products Group.

In job advertisements, GT Industries has described itself as a “Tier 1 automotive supplier.”

The facility, which opened in 2017, cost $14 million to construct and included $56 million in equipment purchases, which a Jennings County Economic Development Commission official had previously described as the “largest single investment in Jennings County at one time,” The North Vernon Plain Dealer reported in 2018.

In 2022, GT Industries announced a $26 million expansion of its North Vernon facility and received a tax abatement for a $26.4 million investment, according to Jennings County Economic Development.

The notice states that the layoffs are permanent but will not result in the facility’s closure. The company also states in the notice that affected employees will receive separation benefits but did not provide more details.

It is unclear how many people currently work at the North Vernon plant. As of March 2022, GT Industries employed 198 workers in North Vernon and had planned to hire an additional 20 full-time employees with the expansion, according to Jennings County Economic Development.
