Google is the latest major tech company to announce a multibillion dollar investment in Indiana.

The Mountain View, California-based search giant plans to build a $2 billion data center in Fort Wayne. The announcement comes on the heels of Amazon Web Services' announcement of an $11 billion data center near New Carlisle, which will surpass the BP Whiting Refinery modernization project as the largest private-sector investment in state history, and two months after Meta announced it would build an $800 million data center in southeast Indiana, where it will employ around 100.

“Indiana has made it a strategic priority to cultivate the economy of the future, and we’re already seeing the impact of our work thanks to the partnership of companies like Google,” said Gov. Eric Holcomb. “Not only is Google choosing Indiana to power its global AI and cloud infrastructure, but we’re thrilled to see the company already investing heavily in the northeast Indiana community. These initiatives will help skill-up our Hoosier workforce, preparing residents for the jobs of the future. And, at the same time bringing clean energy resources to the region propelling continued growth in industrial sustainability.”

Google is building a data center and operational support complex on Fort Wayne's southwest side. It will be part of a global network that serves as the backbone of the internet and digital services like Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, Maps, Cloud and Workspace.

The facility will create an estimated 200 jobs, including data center technicians, security staff, groundskeepers and caterers.

“We are thrilled to announce our investment in Fort Wayne, Indiana, as the site for our newest data center,” said Joe Kava, vice president of global data centers at Google. “Our decision to make a commitment of this magnitude is a true testament to the strategic and collaborative nature of many leaders across Indiana, Allen County and, particularly, Fort Wayne. Together, Fort Wayne and Google will help power the digital future, including AI innovation across our enterprise and consumer services.”

The tech giant is partnering with Indiana Michigan Power to power the facility with clean energy. It aims to run its data centers and campuses on carbon-free energy by 2030 and already matches all its electricity consumption with renewable energy purchases.

“There’s never been a better time to be in Fort Wayne,” said Mayor Sharon Tucker. “This investment from Google isn't just about infrastructure or economic development; it's about building a stronger tomorrow, together.”

Indiana is offering Google a 35-year sales tax exemption on a minimum of $800 million in capital, as well as additional tax incentives.
