ATTICA — The Badlands Off Road Park in Attica is jockeying to become a major tourist destination in west central Indiana, competing with attractions such as Monticello's Indiana Beach.

The park recently has made several improvements and expansion in an effort to broaden its appeal and attract more tourists to the region.

Kyle Knosp purchased the all-terrain vehicle park about two years ago and since then has been working to provide enhanced trails and better lodging for patrons.

“We’re trying to become a tourist destination,” Knosp said. “In our industry some feel you have to be an enthusiast to do it. We’re trying to make it into something for the average person.”

Knosp said ATVing is an activity that is very accessible, requiring a basic understanding for the vehicle and the possession of a driver’s license.

“Most people can pretty much navigate themselves,” Knosp added.

Part of  Knosp’s plan to convert the Badlands into a regional tourist destination lies in the expansion of onsite accommodations.

The park has added six vacation homes and a campsite for tent and RV camping, which offers full hookups. A number of cabins are currently under construction, and they also will be available as rentals. Knosp said these cabins will open for July 4th weekend.

Expanding accommodation options doesn’t just benefit the Badlands, Knosp said; it has the potential to elevate Attica and Fountain County as a major tourist destination.

“There are so many things to do in this area like The Potholes, Portland Arch and the Ravine Park,” Knosp added.
