RICHMOND — With the news of the first positive coronavirus test results in Wayne County came the questions: Where have these people been recently? Where do they live? Where do they work?

In short, how do I know if I've been exposed?

That information isn't being released to the general public by the Wayne County Health Department, which has cited federal health care privacy laws for not disclosing those details.

But health department staff know the answers to those questions through work called a contact tracing investigation that begins when the department is notified of a resident with a positive case of COVID-19.

"When we get that, we contact the patient and get as much information as we can from them," said Christine Stinson, executive director of the county health department.
