LAFAYETTE — On the same day that President Donald Trump announced an order forcing the opening of meat-processing plants shuttered because of the coronavirus emergency, Indiana Packers Corp. in Delphi began preparations to safely re-open.
Citing his authority under the Defense Production Act, Trump declared in an executive order that "it is important that processors of beef, pork and poultry ... in the food supply chain continue operating and fulfilling orders to ensure a continued supply of protein for Americans," USA Today reported on Tuesday.
Indiana Packers Corp. closed its plant in Delphi on Friday because 15 employees tested positive for COVID-19, according to a news release last week from Jeff Feirick, Indiana Packers' vice president of corporate planning.
On Tuesday, Feirick published a news release indicating a date for reopening of the plant would be determined later this week after all of its employees are tested for COVID-19.
"In conjunction with its ongoing health and safety assessment, Indiana Packers Corp. ... is laying out its plan to resume operations after temporarily suspending production last week at its Delphi, Indiana, facility," Feirick wrote.
