Duke Energy announced Monday its first solar power plant at Naval Support Activity Crane is online and generating energy.

The plant, which began generating solar power on Jan. 31, has satisfied its procedural reviews by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, according to spokesman Lew Middleton.

The plant is capable of generating up to 17 megawatts of alternating current power. Although it’s located 40 miles south of Bloomington, the plant has a 69-county service area and can provide electricity for more than 2,700 average-sized homes when operating at full capacity.
