Elkhart County's unemployment rate dropped in August but is still more than double what it was one year ago. Within the cities, the jobless numbers dropped almost 1.5 percent in Goshen but climbed more than a half percent in Elkhart.
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development released the August figures today. The state's unemployment rate was 6.3 percent in August and the country's was 6.1 percent.
In August, Elkhart County recorded an unemployment rate of 8.9 percent, down from the 9.4 percent recorded in July but up dramatically from the 4.4 percent reported in August 2007. Elkhart County now has the fifth highest unemployment rate in Indiana.
Unlike the county, the city of Elkhart saw its jobless rate rise in August to 10.4 percent, up from 9.8 percent in July and from 6.0 percent in August 2007.
The city of Goshen fared better with its unemployment rate at 8.8 percent in August, down from 10.2 percent in July but double from the 4.4 percent in August 2007
