Fayette County unemployment fell in July by more than one-half percent but continued to be highest in the state, according to the most recent statistics released by Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
The jobless rate in Fayette County was 10.9 percent in the preliminary report for July, down from 11.5 percent in the report for June.
LaGrange County ranked second in July at 10.3. DuBois County posted the lowest unemployment rate at 3.7 percent.
Wayne County joblessness ranked 27th in July, Franklin County 39th and Union County 53rd.
Indiana's preliminary seasonally-adjusted July unemployment rate was 6.1 percent.
Workforce Development reported 1,166 unemployed in Fayette County in July out of a labor force of 10,651. Fayette County's unemployment rate in July 2007 was 6.7 percent.
Unemployment rates in the four Whitewater Valley counties were mixed in July.
Franklin County had an unemployment rate of 6.4 percent in July, a decrease of three-tenths of a percent from the revised figures for June. The number of unemployed was 787 out of a labor force of 12,315. Franklin County's July 2007 unemployment rate was 5.0 percent.
Union County had an unemployment rate of 5.8 percent in July, a decrease of three-tenths of a percent from the revised figures for June. The number of unemployed was 215 out of a labor force of 3,723. Union County's July 2007 unemployment rate was 4.2 percent.
Wayne County had an unemployment rate of 7.1 percent in July, an increase of one-tenth of a percent from the revised figures for June. The number of unemployed was 2,459 out of a labor force of 34,694. Wayne County's July 2007 unemployment rate was 5.2 percent.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reported unemployment statistics for 33 Indiana cities in the state with populations of more than 25,000, including Richmond.
The July unemployment rate in Richmond was 7.4 percent, unchanged from the figure for June. Richmond's July 2007 jobless rate was 5.5 percent.
