Lafayette becomes 19th Hoosier city to add gender identity protection

The Lafayette City Council voted 8-0 to amend the city's Human Relations Ordinance to include age, veteran status and gender identity to the list of protected classes. This was the second and final reading of the city amendment.

The Tippecanoe County Board of Commissioners also voted to approve an amendment that adds gender identity to the county's list of protected classes. All three commissioners voted in favor of the amendment. The county amendment still must pass a second reading on Sept. 19.

Although the commissioners' vote was unanimous, some residents in attendance of the Tuesday meeting found themselves on opposing sides.

James Pratt spoke against the amendment, expressing concerns over bathroom safety.
