South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg has again fanned the flames of speculation over whether he'll seek the helm of the Democratic National Committee, according to a national political report Thursday.

Buttigieg, speaking with political news site Politico, said he would step down as mayor if selected as DNC chair.

"I don't see how you can do two things at once," he told Politico. "It's one thing if you have the presidency, maybe."

Neither Buttigieg nor his chief of staff, James Mueller, could be immediately reached for comment Thursday night.

The Politico piece reported that the mayor "has been making the rounds with committee members."

"I think 10 days from now is the very latest that you can get in the race," Buttigieg told Politico. The party will vote on the chairmanship at its winter meeting Feb. 23-26.
