Purdue campus won't go smoke-free just yet

Purdue President Mitch Daniels proposed a smoking ban last fall to faculty, staff and students. The idea failed to receive strong support from the groups, however, so Daniels is instead considering to reduce the number of designated smoking spots on campus over time.

"Having gathered lots and lots of input, we're going to try to move forward, but not all the way — at least not immediately — to a full smoking ban," he said at a University Senate meeting Monday.

Purdue has 21 designated smoking areas across campus. To immediately address concerns of passersby having to walk through smoke, Daniels proposed to relocate two smoking spots that are near high-traffic areas to less busy spaces.
