NILES — Starting today, legal recreational pot will be close at hand.
The ReLeaf Center of Niles is set to open at 10 a.m., offering the first legal sales in the area of Michigan-grown and regulated marijuana. Adult sales started late last year at some locations elsewhere in the state.
ReLeaf is located at 1840 Terminal Road, in the industrial park. It opened its doors just this past fall as a medical marijuana provisioning center, and today is adding adult-use, or recreational, sales, after obtaining Wednesday night the last local license it needed.
ReLeaf officials were expecting they might see a rush of business this morning.
Here are some things to know.
Q. Who can buy?
A. Any adult age 21 or older who presents a state-issued ID to verify their age. That means any adult, including Hoosiers. But Hoosiers should remember that as soon as they cross the state line, any marijuana item they may possess becomes illegal.
Q. What kind of marijuana products are available for purchase?
A. Four varieties of bulk flower — indica, sativa and hybrid — with THC levels ranging from about 13% to 17%, and with names like False Teeth, Catatonic and Triangle Shine. One variety with a CBD content of more than 9% will be available.
Each customer will initially be limited to 2 grams of flower. Concentrates, edibles, tinctures and vaping products also will be available.
Q. Why is the selection limited?
A. Many Michigan marijuana cultivators are just getting growing. The commercial medical and recreational marijuana industries in Michigan have evolved rapidly in just the past couple of years.
Flower, or bud, has been in high demand among medical patients. The state is allowing medical businesses to transfer some cannabis products, including flower, for adult-use sales.
Q. How much can I buy?
A. Michigan law allows an adult to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana. So the purchase limit per transaction is what you can legally carry, said David Harns, spokesman for the Michigan Marijuana Regulatory Agency.
Q. How much might I expect to spend?
A. Adult-use prices for ReLeaf’s Chesaning, Mich., location, listed on Leafly, offer a guideline.
