The year 2021 is important for Hoosiers because it is when the party in control of the Indiana General Assembly uses U.S. Census data to draw new voting district maps for the state.
The ALL IN For Democracy Coalition has launched a campaign to give citizens a voice in this once-in-a-decade process. Made up of 25 organizations, including the League of Women Voters, ALL IN 4 Democracy is working to make the redistricting process in Indiana more transparent, according to a news release from the League of Women Voters of Bloomington-Monroe County.
The centerpiece of this effort will be establishing a multi-partisan team consisting of nine Hoosiers who will serve on an Indiana Citizens Redistricting Commission. The ICRC will be diverse and representative of Hoosier voters. It will function to:
1. Conduct virtual hearings and gather public testimony on how Indiana’s voting districts should be drawn for the next 10 years.
2. Gather public input regarding criteria that should be used to draw the district maps.
3. Encourage citizens to use easily accessible mapping software to draw their own maps.
4. Monitor the redistricting process of the Indiana General Assembly.
Publicly defined criteria and maps created by the ICRC will be shared with legislators before the redistricting process begins. These criteria and maps will indicate to Indiana’s lawmakers how this process should work.
