A new venture, Indiana Galvanizing LLC, will spend $3 million to buy, renovate and equip a 97,000-square-foot facility in Middlebury for its zinc coating operations.

According to an announcement released Friday by the Indiana Economic Development Corp., Indiana Galvanizing has begun hiring management, maintenance and manufacturing personnel, and the facility is expected to up and running by next summer.

Indiana Galvanizing is owned by the Monnig family, which also owns Bob Monnig Industries Inc. and Universal Galvanizing Inc. Bob Monnig Industries was started in 1960 in Glasgow, Mo., by Robert "Bob" Monnig and has about 130 workers at two facilities in Missouri.

Indiana Galvanizing, according to the IEDC announcement, will use a hot-dip galvanizing process that coats steel with zinc to prevent corrosion. It will serve the transportation, agriculture and energy industries.

"Elkhart County was a perfect fit for the new location," Ryan Monnig, plant manager at Bob Monnig Industries, said in the IEDC announcement. "Not only did it meet the geographic requirements, but it also has the small-town values and work ethic that we feel is vital to our success."

The IEDC offered Indiana Galvanizing up to $400,000 in performance-based tax credits and up to $50,000 in training grants based on the company's job creation plans. Elkhart County officials will consider a tax abatement for the company.
