LIGONIER — Silgan Plastics will lay off 69 salaried and hourly workers at its Ligonier plant by the end of August as it restructures its manufacturing operations, a company official stated in a letter sent to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

Silgan does screen printing and decorative work for plastic containers at its plant at 910 Gerber St. The expected date of the layoffs is Aug. 26, Deanna Lawyer, Silgan’s senior regional human resources manager, wrote in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter dated Friday.

The company plans on relocating and reducing some operations at its Ligonier facility, Lawyer wrote. That’s expected to occur through Sept. 8.

The layoffs include seven salaried positions and 62 hourly workers, according to the WARN Act letter. Production and maintenance employees are represented by the Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastics & Allied Workers International Union, which is part of the AFL-CIO.

Lawyer indicated in the WARN Act letter that the collective bargaining agreement for workers at the plant doesn’t include transfer rights to another company facility.

Silgan is based in Chesterfield, Missouri, and has 20 plants in the United States and Canada. The company produces plastic bottles, tubes, closures and fitments, and decorative elements, including labeling and silkscreen printing.

Company and union officials could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Silgan’s Ligonier plant had a total of 315 workers as of April, according to an annual tax abatement compliance form submitted to the city. Noble County records indicate the company has in recent years received six abatements that are still outstanding, totaling $2.2 million on $15.6 million in equipment investments.
