SOUTH BEND — Local auto manufacturer AM General announced new contracts Monday, adding to a string of deals in recent months.
The company secured a total of $42.1 million for new Humvee contracts and modifications to existing domestic and international contracts for vehicles and parts for Iraq, Afghanistan, Tunisia, Israel, Turkey, Kenya, Lebanon and the United States, according to a news release.
The deals cover new vehicle production, international ambulance vehicles, automotive kits, spare parts and training, with production to be completed at the company's Mishawaka facility.
“AM General continues to grow our backlog of new production HMMWVs while developing comprehensive modernization and maintenance programs for domestic and international customers,” said Chris Vanslager, executive vice president of defense programs, in the release.
The new contracts announced Monday are among several that AM General has secured after losing a multi-billion dollar Joint Light Tactical Vehicle contract — a loss that made many in the industry question the company's future.
