The Indiana Economic Development Corp., determined to cleanse the state’s tainted image following the Religious Freedom Restoration Act snafu, is undertaking a “reputation enhancement initiative.”
The IEDC heralds itself as the state’s lead economic development agency. It was established in 2005 to replace the former Department of Commerce. And, to respond quickly to the needs of businesses, the IEDC was designed to operate like a business.
One of those unique quasi-governmental agencies, the IEDC is steered by a 12-member board chaired by Gov. Michael Pence. Its distinct mission is to attract and support new business investment and create new jobs for Hoosiers.
To bring the state into a more pristine perspective, the IDEC announced it will pay $750,000 to a public relations firm as the first installment of its image makeover. The cost of the second phase is still undetermined, but the agency is ready to invest $2 million to paint the state in a more positive light.
Here’s a suggestion: Resist the knee-jerk reaction. Simply treat everyone fairly in the future and remain focused on doing business.
Here’s another idea: If the agency is convinced “image is everything” and positive publicity is paramount at this point in time, then at least hire a Hoosier public relations firm, one that knows Indiana values, not one headquartered in New York.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson sagely opined: “Do your work, and I shall know you. Do your work, and you shall reinforce yourself.”
Save the $2 million or invest it in infrastructure. The wounds will heal. This too shall pass.
The truth is: Indiana is a good place to work, visit, and conduct business.
