A total of 311 employees, including 284 full-time teachers, were on a reduction-in-force list approved by the Fort Wayne Community Schools Board Monday.

The layoff list included 161 high school teachers, 78 middle school teachers and 45 elementary school teachers.

Not all of the teaching positions on the list actually will be cut, however. The district plans to permanently eliminate 91 positions as part of $15 million in budget cuts being made this year. The additional layoffs were included to provide flexibility in staffing as two schools close and 11 others experience significant staffing changes.

By the beginning of the fall school year, 193 of the 284 positions are expected to be restored, although staff members may not return to the same positions.

Teachers receiving the reduction-in-force notices were told in-person by their principals before the board meeting. Official notices will be distributed Thursday.

Teachers will also have an opportunity later in the week to attend a meeting during which they can ask questions about the process.
