HUNTINGBURG — Huntingburg Mayor Denny Spinner, along with Boxer Girl, LLC President Jane Hendrickson, announced this morning the Stellar Communities workforce housing project is set to be headed by Jagoe Homes of Owensboro with the first phase of development kicking off in spring 2016.
The new privately-funded development named “Hunters Crossing” will create more than 120 new single-family homes on Chestnut Street between 12th Street and 17th Street as well as a nearby park. The announcement comes a month after the release of the housing study by economic development group Dubois Strong that found a lack of affordable workforce housing in the county.
The average home in the new development will consist of three bedrooms, two baths and a two-car garage on 1,500 square feet, Hendrickson said. The homes will not have basements. The lots are projected to be approximately 65 to 75 feet by 120 feet, or about one-third of an acre each.
Hendrickson said that although the official start date is spring of 2016, if weather permits, the project could commence as early as October of this year.
The price range for the homes in the development is expected to be consistent with the recommendations from the housing study which lists a target price point of $150,000. The addition of homes is intended to attract both new residents and current employees who commute to work from out of the area to move to Huntingburg.
Spinner said he is proud of the professional partners Huntingburg has attracted to this project in Hendrickson and Jagoe Homes and said he believes this is a big step not only for Huntingburg’s Stellar program but for the county to meet the need for affordable workforce housing laid by Dubois Strong.
“It’s rewarding to see that other folks, not only those that are in our community, but to see those who have not been in Huntingburg to come here, see what we see and share that vision with us. It’s exciting,” Spinner said.
One of the new streets within the development will be named “Stellar Way,” in honor of the parent project that created the development.
Dubois Strong President Ed Cole said that Hunters Crossing marks a step forward in meeting the deep need for affordable housing, and he hopes the addition will prompt more opportunities for development to be pursued in Jasper and Ferdinand.
“This absolutely validates the study, and it also validates the initiative here in Huntingburg,” Cole said. “We believe this is a crucial element and first step toward getting additional workforce housing in Dubois County, and we see this as the model moving forward.”
