Gary may soon land two passenger airlines at its Gary/Chicago International Airport.
Skybus will have daily flights from Gary to Greensboro, N.C., according to state Rep. Charlie Brown, D-Gary.
Another airline will also host flights, in smaller planes, between Gary and Indianapolis, Brown said.
Chris Curry, director of the airport, would not confirm that the airport had contracts signed with any passenger airline, saying only that he has had "good conversations" with Skybus and Cape Air, which recently began service from South Bend to Indianapolis.
However, the airport alerted the media on Tuesday that it is making a "significant" announcement at a news conference today, but Curry played coy on Tuesday as to what that announcement would be.
Gary is without passenger air service, and Curry has long been attempting to woo a variety of airlines to the airport.
Brown said airport officials will likely request a meeting with Gov. Mitch Daniels, asking for state subsidies of some kind to help make the arrangements with the air carriers work.
"We definitely need to get something stable in there," Brown said Tuesday.
