Changes to county highway workers' schedules were approved Tuesday by Grant County commissioners to begin having the highway department work four 10-hour days.

"It could be a major cost-savings in our fuel fleet," said David White, Grant County Highway superintendent.

White said the new schedule will begin Monday, and he will test it through early October to see how it works and whether it saves the county money. He said, for example, on a chip and seal project several vehicles are driving out to sites all days of the week. With fuel costs high, the new schedule would save a day of driving.

Highway department offices will remain on a five-day work schedule.
