SOUTH BEND -- The Common Council won't accept any new residential tax abatements until the city sorts out the impact of House Bill 1001.
The legislation, now known as House Enrolled Act 1001 since it was signed into law in March, will dramatically affect the amount of property taxes cities and counties collect, which use the money for services such as public safety. Property taxes for residential properties will be capped at 1 percent for residential properties, 2 percent for rental properties and 3 percent for businesses.
