HARTFORD CITY − Indiana Michigan Power has filed plans with state authorities to build four solar farms capable of generating power for more than 200,000 typical homes by mid-2026. One of the solar power plants is called Lake Trout and would be located in Northeast Blackford County.

The solar farms were one of a number of renewable energy initiatives I&M announced at the beginning of April.

“I&M is taking these major strides in transitioning to cleaner, more diverse energy sources to best serve our customers, the environment and the economies of the communities we serve,” said Steve Baker, I&M president and chief operating officer.

The electric utility has submitted detailed plans to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission and Michigan Public Service Commission for the four new solar power plants in Indiana with a combined generation capacity of 749 megawatts.

The proposed four plants are Mayapple, in Pulaski County; Sculpin in DeKalb County, Lake Trout and another plant in Elkhart County. Each of the four solar power plants would be built by private developers, according to I&M, with the utility investing about $1 billion in the Lake Trout and Mayapple facilities, which I&M will own and operate.
