GOSHEN -- Elkhart County commissioners on Monday approved appropriation of $1.1 million to help extend sewer and water lines to the new Ivy Tech Community College campus.

Now the proposal, passed unanimously without discussion, goes to the Elkhart County Council for final consideration, probably on Oct. 3.

The expenditure is one of the local contributions meant to assist in ongoing construction of the new $20 million campus at C.R. 17 and C.R. 18, east of Elkhart. The funds would come from property tax revenue generated within the Northeast Corridor Tax Increment Finance District, where the construction is taking place.

The city of Elkhart sewer and water lines will be extended from a nearby apartment complex. Ivy Tech eventually plans to contribute $100,000, reducing the county's liability in the project to $1 million.
