GOSHEN -- George Weston Bakeries Inc will build a $47 million Allen Foods plant in Elkhart County, according to one economic development official.
Members of the Elkhart County redevelopment commission wanted to know Monday if there's still a chance the plant may run away.
"Do you feel they are at the point of no return?" asked commission member Ken Pletcher on Monday.
"Yes," said Robert Dunlop, developer of Remington South Industrial Park, along C.R. 6. just outside of the city of Elkhart, where plant construction has begun.
Following the meeting, Bill Bradley said he is optimistic the bakery will come to Elkhart County, bringing 100 jobs. The executive director of the Economic Development Corp. of Elkhart County said he is 99.9 percent sure.
The commission adopted a complicated tax plan to gradually reimburse the developer $250,000 from taxes generated by the bakery. The payment is contingent on the bakery's commitment to Elkhart County.
The city of Elkhart has not offered any deal yet, he said.
The county's move allows the company to apply for economic incentives from the state, which was his goal, Bradley said.
Pennsylvania-based Weston makes such brands as Entenmann's baked goods, Boboli pizza crust and Thomas' English Muffins.
