FREMONT — A longtime Fremont company is planning on a $700,000 expansion and had a tax abatement request approved by the Fremont Redevelopment Commission Thursday.
Fremont Plastics, 500 W. Water St., is planning on a 10,000-square-foot expansion for additional manufacturing space. The company has been in business in Fremont since 1978.
Lyndon Tucker, Fremont Plastics president and chief executive officer, said it was the first tax abatement his company has sought.
Tucker said currently the company employs 26 people and four more are projected to be added. No layoffs are anticipated, he said.
Fremont Plastics does custom medical thermoform packaging and manufacturing, and produces medical trays and medical packaging, Tucker said. The company’s primary customers are in life sciences and the medical field.
Tucker said in his application the new building is being constructed as an expansion of the existing facility through a connection to the breezeway. No building is being demolished or replaced in the project.
A thermoformer machine will be the new piece of equipment added.
The tax abatement for a seven-year term will now be recommended to the Fremont Town Council for consideration. The town council will consider the abatement at its next meeting, Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m. at the Fremont Town Hall, 205 N. Tolford St.
According to town calculations, if the abatement is approved, it could save Fremont Plastics $56,000 total during the seven-year term.
