INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana University Board of Trustees unanimously approved plans to build a $5 million dining hall at its meeting Friday afternoon.
The plan calls for a single-story addition to the north end of Goodbody Hall. It will be between 5,000 and 6,000 square feet and hold between 200 and 250 occupants.
The addition is actually a modification to the previously approved Wells Quad renovation plan. That plan called for renovating two of the four buildings in the quad — Goodbody and Morrison halls — to return them to residential spaces.
In the original Wells Quad renovation plan, the dinning hall was going to be built in Morrison Hall. However, installing a kitchen in a building that was constructed prior to World War II proved impractical, said Tom Morrison, vice president for capital planning and facilities.
After considering space and aesthetics in the quad, Morrison said adding onto the north end of Goodbody Hall was determined to be the best option.
The addition will match the collegiate gothic architecture of neighboring buildings. It will have large windows and overlook the Jordan River. There will be outdoor seating both at the ground level and on a terrace on the roof of the addition.
