MUNCIE — Delaware County’s new jail would cost $45 million or less, according to the firm that’s likely to be hired to build the facility, and could have as many as 750 inmate beds.

The new jail would triple in size the inmate space of the current Delaware County Justice Center and also include most local court functions.

The county commissioners on Monday released details of the answer to the county’s request for proposal for a new jail in the former ASONS/Wilson Middle School building. The proposal, the only one the county received, is from Indianapolis-area firm BW Development, which put together a partnership to design and build the jail.

Commissioners James King and Shannon Henry voted to accept the BW Development proposal. Commissioner Sherry Riggin voted against.

The commissioners will hold a public hearing on the proposal at 9 a.m. Monday, June 25, in their courtroom. The commissioners could then give final approval and the jail project could begin.

King told The Star Press that the jail plan as it stands now calls for a new jail of between 500 and 750 inmate beds.
