General Electric made two major, divergent announcements today. The Bloomington GE plant's plan to close has been canceled. But 190 of its 720 employees will lose their jobs in late September.
"That part of it is a little bittersweet," plant manager Kent Suiters said during an interview at the plant of the roughly 26 percent decrease in workforce.
Employees who commented on the news were not optimistic about the future of the plan, however. The layoffs expected and the history of job loss at GE contributed to an air of skepticism. Some also said they feared the move was a way for the company to get around paying employee benefits promised with the closing package.
