Hoosier military veterans facing financial hardship can receive $500 for each child or college student living in their household to purchase school supplies or other education essentials.

The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs is making money available through the state's Military Family Relief Fund for a third consecutive year to help the children of eligible veterans start their school year on the right foot.

"The financial challenges of preparing for a new school year can be overwhelming, especially for veteran families trying to make ends meet on an everyday basis," said Dennis Wimer, director of the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs.

"Operation Back to School is our way of offering tangible assistance through the Military Family Relief Fund to ensure children have the tools they need to succeed, and veterans receive the support they deserve."

To qualify, a veteran must have served in any branch of the U.S. military or National Guard and possess appropriate discharge paperwork.

The applicant must also provide documentation confirming the number of school-age children living in his or her household, the veteran's limited financial resources, residency in Indiana, and the ability to receive direct deposit of the money in a checking or savings account.

Funding requests can be submitted starting Monday. The deadline to apply for Operation Back to School funds is Aug. 30.
