Following a furious, months-long debate, it appears Lake County is on the cusp of adopting a local-option income tax.

In a 5-1 vote today, the Lake County Council voted in an income tax. But unlike other plans discussed, this one would only give the property-tax relief generated by the income tax to the owners of single-family homes, not business owners or landlords.

The Lake County Board of Commissioners can veto the measure. But with one-time income-tax opponent Lake County Councilman Ted Bilski, D-Hobart, joining support of the measure, the county council can override the veto at a later date.

County Councilman Tom O'Donnell, D-Dyer, was absent for today's vote.
