MUNCIE – Within a few years, the former Harrison Elementary School on the south side could become a permanent home for some city families who are now homeless.
Muncie City Council voted unanimously in favor of a zoning change for the old school building at 1300 S. Liberty St. The change would allow the school building, closed in 1971, to be redeveloped as 16 apartments intended for use by families lacking permanent shelter.
“Currently there are over 160 households on the coordinated waiting list for housing assistance in Delaware County,” Maura J. Hoff, an attorney with DeFur Voran in Muncie, told council members Monday.
The former school would be able to accommodate creation of 16 units of “permanent supportive housing” after a zoning change from an R4 (residence) zone to a BC (business community) zone, she said.
The Muncie Delaware County Plan Commission had unanimously recommended the council make the zoning change to allow the residences to be built within the former elementary school.
