MISHAWAKA — Plans for a new, 106-unit, "boutique" apartment complex with a rooftop deck on Front Street in downtown Mishawaka moved forward this week as developers revised a proposal from 2018 that now includes more parking on Hill Street, near Jesus Latin Grill and Mishawaka Main Junior High Apartments.
Pat Matthews, partner in the project Front St. Opportunity Fund, LLC, received approval from the Redevelopment Commission this week for the plan.
Front Street Apartments will be located in the block bordered by Hill Street, Front Street, First Street and Spring Street. It will be directly south of The Mill apartment complex, on the southwest corner of the traffic circle there.
When the plan was pitched in 2018, the city asked developers to modify it to accommodate efforts to expand Hill Street to allow for more on-street parking. That essentially moved the development some 35 feet to the east to allow the city room on Hill street for the future parking configuration.
Ken Prince, director of planning and community development, said the city had plans to build a public parking lot on the block, but it opted to expand Hill Street instead to help with parking for visitors, commercial traffic and surrounding businesses.
